Oak Hill (VA) Academy is loaded and ready to defend their title as national champions. Leading the way for the Warriors this year is senior, Devontae Shuler, who is entering his second year at Oak Hill after originally coming from South Carolina. Despite spending over a year in Virginia, the South Carolina Gamecocks have continued to be the favorite in Shuler’s commitment.  Wherever he ends up, Shuler should be an instant impact player at the next level.

Standing at 6’3”, Shuler may be slightly undersized for the shooting guard position, however, if you see him play, he eases all concerns. “I feel that I play well on both ends of the court,” said Shuler. “I set my teammates up to score the ball.”

Shuler’s selfless style of play was the main component in Oak Hill’s national championship run this year. Playing alongside high-level recruits such as Matt Coleman, Tyshon Alexander, and Lindell Wigginton, Shuler had to take a more reserved role, but that didn’t affect him in the slightest. In fact, playing with Oak Hill has been great for Shuler’s game, as he says, “We play on the big stage. That’s the main part, getting used to that because, after high school, I’ll be playing on the big stage.”

There is no denying that Shuler will be playing on some of the biggest stages next year, no matter where he decides to attend college. Recently, Shuler named his top ten schools, including UNC, Louisville, Oklahoma State, USC, South Carolina, Texas, Ole Miss, WKU, Miami, and Kentucky. Among these schools, Shuler has set up official visits to South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma State. “ Each school let their guards play,” Shuler explained. “That is what I’m going to make my decision on, whether they have good guard play and how my connection is with the coach.”

Shuler was really able to play freely this summer on the Nike EYBL circuit with Team CP3. Although they could not come away with a Peach Jam title, Shuler showed great prowess in his ability to lead his team through the circuit. Now, with his final year of high school in session, Shuler has one more thing he wants to do before he leaves. “For the rest of high school, I want to win another national championship.” he said.

Between a national championship at Oak Hill and a good showing with Team CP3, Devontae Shuler enters his senior year in stride, with the opportunity to cement his status as an elite prospect in the 2017 class. Despite falling out of the ESPN Top 100 rankings for 2017, Shuler is still regarded as a Top-100 player by Scout.com, in addition to other recruiting sites. As his recruitment nears its conclusion, Devontae Shuler is undoubtedly a player to keep on your radar in the Class of 2017. Shuler sums it up best, saying, “If I just stay focused and continue to do what I do, then I’ll stay on track.”
