As Sunrise Christian High School (Bel Aire, KS) Alum and current Oklahoma Sooner starting Guard, Buddy Hield dominates his way through his senior year of college, current Sunrise Christian Shooting Guard and Oklahoma commit, Kameron McGusty prepares to make a name for himself as he nears his start at OU. Although he hasn’t even started his college career, it is clear that Kameron McGusty has some big shoes to fill, replacing the second leading scorer in the NCAA this season. “At OU, It’s all about the players and developing them, so coaching is a big part of the culture, especially since Coach Kruger has been there at the program. It was the best fit for me and they told me that I could be an impact player as soon as I get there. With the roster they have and the guards they have, I believe that I could come in and play some big minutes.” explained McGusty.

Kameron McGusty has always been, for the most part, a very well-rounded player on the basketball court, but if you see him play for yourself, there is no doubt that one part of his game will stick out more than the others: his ability to create with the ball. McGusty says for himself, “I can get to the basket. I can dish it off. I can distribute the ball,  so when I have the ball in my hands, I can be a playmaker. That’s what I do best.” His ability to create for his teammates should translate well at Oklahoma, but for now, McGusty is focusing on ending his senior season with a bang. “[We] definitely want to make it to the Dick’s tournament at the end of the season at Madison Square Garden,” he said, “That is definitely a big picture goal, somewhere we want to be.” That goal is definitely in reach as Sunrise Christian is well over .500 and a favorite to win a state championship.

Now that McGusty has completed the recruiting process, he has the opportunity to reflect and learn from his experience, as he said himself, “At the beginning, I loved it. As a 15, 16, 17-year-old, to have coaches calling my phone… I never really talked about it like that, but now that I’m older and committed, I think, wow, it’s crazy. When you talk to your friends that don’t have scholarships, they are like ‘I have to pay this type of tuition’ and ‘I have to get this type of help from this person’. I’m like man, I don’t have to do any of that, so looking back at it, I don’t feel that I appreciated it as much as I should have, but it’s really, truly a blessing.” It is clear that McGusty learned a lot from his experience, which should be beneficial to him in the future. “Based on what I’ve learned, don’t take it for granted,” he said. “Don’t think of it as, ‘This school wants me. So what?’ because they can take offers from you any day. One day, you might get hurt or just lose your love for the game and they won’t always be there, so definitely don’t take it for granted.” McGusty held offers from schools such as, but not limited to, Louisville, Indiana, Florida, and Texas, but when it came time to make a decision, there was only one school on his mind.

As Kameron McGusty finishes out his Senior year of high school, the comparisons to Buddy Hield continue to be apparent. Oklahoma should be in great shape to transition from one superstar from the next. It will be a blast to see him develop as a player. Not only is Kameron McGusty a player to look out for in the 2016 class, but he is also Soon to be a Sooner.
