While most ninth graders are just getting used to the intensity of high school basketball, Scottie Lewis is already reaching levels above and beyond the expectations. The #16 player in the Class of 2019, according to ESPN, already holds offers from Seton Hall, Rutgers, Villanova, Florida, VCU, Rutgers, Colgate, Temple, and UConn, and the offers should continue to pile in, as Lewis has been dominating the Under Armour Circuit with Team Rio Elite. “This is the most competitive circuit in the USA,” says the 6-foot-4 guard. “Every game is a tough game which makes you put your best effort forward.”

It is clear that Lewis is always looking to put his best effort forward. When he picked up the game of basketball at the age of 12, his father played a large role in his early success, as he said, “ Sixth grade is when I started playing basketball and my dad was my main influence,” he continued. “When I met my dad in sixth grade, he introduced the game to me. It came naturally to me.”

Lewis’ father played collegiate basketball at Ohio State and played overseas for a while. Although he could not always learn from his father, due to him playing overseas, Lewis says, “he was always there in spirit.” However, once the 6’4” guard from Rainey (NJ) High School got a handle on the game, his stock began to rise. “My father is there in spirit. I haven’t seen him for a long time, but my mom is always there to help me and keep me level headed,” says Lewis. “With all the publicity and attention I’m receiving, from coaches and everyone else, I definitely feel accomplished and it’s a good feeling.”

His success has definitely with Rainey High School has surely translated to his work with Team Rio Elite this summer. Playing in the 16U division, Lewis is averaging 11.9 points per game, leading his team to a 9-3 record and a spot in the UAA Association Finals. With the incredible success that he has seen this season, college coaches have undoubtedly taken notice. As he continues to receive plenty of scholarship offers, Lewis has maintained a level head, saying, “When I’m with my friends and family, we don’t really talk about basketball. They always tell me that I have to take care of my family and do the right thing to make it to the top and to be the best.”

However, when looking for the right college, Lewis has placed a clear emphasis on academics. Hoping to pursue a career in journalism, he seems to be on the right track for success. “Academics have always been a big part of my life. So, I’m looking for a school that will not only do me justice, academically but also help me advance in my academics.” says the rising sophomore. “I want to major in journalism with a minor in creative writing, so I’m looking for a school that does well in those two areas.”

While it is clear that basketball is a priority for Lewis, academics and writing are just as valued. An avid writer, Lewis spends most of his free time with a pen in his hand(does that sound alright?). “Writing has been a big aspect of my life, with the people around me always moving. It’s a good way to get away.”

As Scottie Lewis and Team Rio Elite, surge through the UAA Circuit, there is no denying that he has a clear motivation for success. Scottie Lewis is undeniably a player to follow in the 2019 class, as he wants to be more than just a local hero. “I don’t want to be one of those guys that are just big in their town. I don’t want to be known in just New Jersey. I don’t want to be just a New Jersey legend. I want to be known all over.”
