Coming off a win with Team CP3 (NC) at the 8 in Las Vegas, Lavar Batts continues to be a force on the summer circuit. At 6’1”, 160 lbs, he may not seem like the most imposing force, but with a terrific motor and an improving shot, Batts has proved to be an essential piece for Team CP3 in their title run. “It’s been wonderful and as sweet as last season,” said Batts. “I’ve been playing with these guys since my ninth grade year and we’ve just been getting better and better.”

That may be true, but it is hard to improve on last year’s team that was one point away from making the Nike Peach Jam Finals. Batts, who has been a vital part of Team CP3 for the last few years, has definitely become a better player, due to his experience on the EYBL circuit, as he says, “They help a lot with becoming a better ball player and a better point guard.”

Batts began his work at the point guard position when he was only four years old. Taught the game by his father, family has always been the main proponent in Batts’ life, especially now, as he is nearing the end of the recruiting process. “They tell me that wherever I go, they’re behind me 100%.” explained the 17-year-old. “Wherever I decide to go, they’ll be there right behind me, supporting me. I’m going to go to the school that I think is right, not where someone else wants me to go.”

Batts knows what he is looking for in terms of choosing a college, however, he did mention that he would like to take visits to a few schools before he makes his decision. “I will probably go to visit Clemson.” he continued. “I’m also trying to get down to Florida State, Butler, and Oklahoma.”

Although he has no timetable for when he plans to commit, Batts recently cut his list to seven schools. The schools he is now considering are Oklahoma, Clemson, Florida State, Nebraska, Georgia, Butler, and VCU. However, hecontinues to be recruited by many high division 1 schools. With double-digit offers, Batts has plenty of schools to choose from, but that doesn’t stop him from being grateful, saying, “Whatever offers I have, I’m thankful for, so whatever comes in, comes in. I’m really not looking for anything.”

This attitude has helped Batts shift his focus away from the recruiting process and more towards his game on the court. Often compared to players such as John Wall, Batts undoubtedly has a lot of pressure on him, especially after being ranked by ESPN as being the 99th ranked player in the 2017 class. With constant attention surrounding him, Batts has maintained his ability to live the life of a normal teenager. “I don’t let anything get to me. People will say, ‘He’s all this, he’s all that.’ I’ll say thanks and keep working.” stated the high school senior. “At the end of the day, I know what I’m capable of doing, so I just stay humble.”

It’s not only basketball that Batts works hard in. In the classroom, Batts has been a model student and has done a great job of balancing school and sports. “The way I balance it, is that I don’t use my phone during the week because I know that is going to be a distraction,” explained Batts. “I just read books and focus on basketball.”

This superb focus has allowed Batts to thrive on and off the court, leading to many accomplishments, such as his most recent tournament win in Las Vegas. Now, with his senior year upcoming, Lavar Batts is certainly a player to watch in the Class fo 2017 and it is clear, he is , "Capable of Greatness."
