Success is Vital

When Baylor commit, Mark Vital steps on the court for his senior year, he has one goal in mind: “I want to win a national championship and win for my teammate who passed away from cancer, Kneiko Ketchens.” This year, Vital’s high school team, Advanced Preparatory International(Dallas,Texas), chose to dedicate their inaugural season to their fallen teammate. Advanced Preparatory International (Also known as API) was formed after the closing of Prime Prep Academy, Vital’s former high school,  and they have already been praised as being one of the most talented high school basketball teams in the nation.

Mark Vital started his high school basketball career at Washington Marion High School in 2012. After two stellar years at the Louisiana high school, Vital decided to transfer to Prime Prep to form a big three consisting of Power Forward, Billy Preston and Shooting Guard, and Terrance Ferguson, all led by coach Ray Forsett. After a successful season, in which Vital showed off his electrifying dunking ability, he looked to finish his high school career at Prime Prep until a turn for the unexpected occurred. On January 30, Prime Prep closed amid allegations of theft and mishandling of funds.  With all of the distractions around Vital, it can be hard to stay centered, but Vital stays focused through it all: “ I stay focused by just staying in the gym and doing my schoolwork. It’s good as long as I got coach Ray [Forsett].” Described Vital.

Vital’s hard work throughout high school began to pay dividends as the scholarship offers piled in. Vital had offers from schools such as Kansas, Louisville, and Western Kentucky, but there was one school that stood above the rest. On September 3, 2013, the skilled forward decided to commit to Baylor University. “Baylor made me feel welcomed and made me feel like I am part of the family. I committed and I didn’t look back.” He explained. While most people in his position would feel immense pressure, Vital stays humble. “I don’t really pay that much attention because everybody has their aspirations. They are just like me and I was once in their position.”

With the season underway, Vital is ready to lead his team to a national title and overcome the death of his fallen teammate. “This year, I’m going to make Kneiko proud.” National Title or not, Mark Vital should be a commanding power at Advanced Preparatory International and a top prospect to look out for in the 2016 class.
