Mark Vital Interview

Q: How many schools did you have offers from before deciding to commit to Baylor University?

A: I had a lot. I had Kansas, Louisville, Western Kentucky, but I’m not sure how many I had in total. I committed and I didn’t even look into it.

Q: What were the deciding factors in choosing Baylor over those schools?

A: It was close to home, a family school and a good christian school.

Q: How did you feel about the recruiting process? Was it fun, stressful... How would you describe it?

A: It was fun. Baylor made me feel welcome and made me feel like I am part of the family.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who is about to begin the recruiting process, based on your experience?

A: Just don’t make the wrong decision. Find a school that loves you, that’s right for you, that is loyal to you, and that plays to your game.

Q: This past summer, you enrolled at Advanced Preparatory International for your senior year. Why did you choose API?

A: [I chose API] because my coach(Ray Forsett) was very loyal to me and i’m loyal to him. I wouldn’t break that loyalty.

Q: After moving from Washington Marion High School to Prime Prep, and now from Prime Prep to API, how have you managed to stay focused throughout your high school career?

A: Just staying in the gym. I stay focused by just staying in the gym and doing my schoolwork. It’s good as long as I got coach Ray [Forsett].

Q: What are your goals for the upcoming season?

A: Win a national championship and win for my teammate who passed away from cancer, Kneiko Ketchens.

Q: What are your goals for the future, beyond high school?

A: To make everybody proud of my family, my future and to make Grandma and Kneiko proud.

Q: What part of your game do you most want to improve upon?

A: I most want to work on coming off the dribble and shooting and playing off the ball.

Q: How do you plan to improve those skills?

A: By just keeping myself in the gym, always in the gym.

Q: Do you have any pregame routines?

A: I pray a lot before a game, listen to music, and eat candy.

Q: How old were you when you started playing basketball? Who was your main influence in starting to play?

A: I wanna say eight or nine years old. My main influences were my mom, dad, and grandmother

Q: What would you say is your greatest achievement so far?

A: One of my greatest achievements is just to see how far I’ve come. My future is getting brighter and brighter every step of the way if I keep working.

Q: How have you handled the pressure of being a top ranked prospect in the 2016 class?

A: I don’t really pay that much attention because everybody has their aspirations. They are just like me and I was once in their position. They treat me the same way that I treated the other players when I was like them.

Q: How have your friends and family influenced you throughout your basketball career?

A: They've stayed on me. Like, one of my cousins, he would come with me to the gym and make sure that I put up shots. My mom and dad kept a basketball around me at all times. My brothers both kept me in the gym.

Q: Have you played any other sports aside from basketball?

A: I played football when I was younger. I was a running back and a receiver.

Q: How did playing football help you improve as a basketball player?

A: Speed, making sure I don’t get hit, but mostly speed. Playing football helped me keep my ‘motor’ going.

Q: Is there any player that you try to model your game after? What player are you most compared to?

A: Coach Ray says I play like a Lebron James. Other people have their own opinions, but I just want to model my game after myself and try to start my own craft.

Q: Do you know what you want to major in, in college yet?

A: Mechanical Engineering

Q: How do you balance school and sports?

A: School comes first. Coach Ray will even sit us out of practice if we aren’t done with our work.

Q: What obstacles have you had to overcome to get to where you are today?

A: Being home sick, partying, friends, I had to keep a lot of that stuff out, and just focus on sports and school because someday, I could have my own place, my friends over at a nice big house, nice car.
