Mason and Maddox Daniels are twins that you don’t want to mess with in high school basketball. After winning a national championship with Montverde Academy (Montverde, FL) in 2015, the brothers shocked the world by announcing their transfer to Beverly Hills High School (Beverly Hills, CA) for their senior season. So far, they have done a great job of proving that “It’s not about where you play, but how you play.”

Both brothers began playing basketball during middle school after being introduced to the game by their father. Since then, they have traveled all over the country, showcasing their basketball talent. They started their high school career at one of the premier basketball schools in the country, Montverde Academy. At Montverde, Mason and Maddox both had to overcome obstacles, most notably, lack of playing time. “Last year, at Montverde, I didn’t get consistent playing time. That was an obstacle, not getting consistent playing time.” Said Maddox.

Not only has playing time been an obstacle, but they have also had to move all over to continue pursuing their dream of making it to the next level. Despite their hardships, a key factor in their success has been their bond with each other: “Moving around a lot, having new friends, but it’s been really good to have Maddox because we’re twins and we can be with each other. It’s okay at school to have friends, but we have each other all the time.” Said Mason.

Due to their lack of playing time at Montverde among other factors, the Daniel’s brothers decided to move to Beverly Hills High School for their senior year. “My dad lives out here and we thought that it would be good to be out here with him. He was the one that introduced us to the game and it’s also turned out to be a really good situation for my brother and I for playing times. Being on the west coast, for exposure, with all the west coast schools looking at us, it’s a good situation.” Explained Maddox.

Since moving to California, they have begun to receive interest from many west coast schools, including USC and Gonzaga. They also mentioned that they would like to play together in college.

Although they both stand at 6’6”, 200lbs, these identical twins are far from identical on the court. Mason focuses his game on attacking the rim and creating for others, Maddox is, as Mason puts it, “A flat out scorer”. Maddox has showcased his scoring talent this year through his stellar shooting and ability to hit from long range. Mason, on the other hand, is more of a facilitator on the court, saying, “My greatest strength is creating for other players and creating for myself through my dribble and my ability to attack the basket.” Despite their different playing styles, on the court, their chemistry is unlike any other. As Mason said, “We know each other’s tendencies, so it’s very easy to play with each other on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.” Their ability to play together with ease has helped Beverly Hills High cement their status as a premier basketball program in Los Angeles County. As former baseball players, the brothers have been able to show their incredible dedication to their craft.

As Mason and Maddox Daniels near the end of their high school career, it will be interesting to follow them on the recruiting trail. With AAU season on the way, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the offers begin to pile in for the twin brothers. Mason and Maddox Daniels are clearly a duo to keep an eye on in the Class of 2016. Mason sums it up best saying, “The fact that I love the game so much is what motivates me to get better and I just want to see where it takes me.”
