As the 2016 NFL Draft comes to an end, we now have the chance to look at the future of the NFL. One player who’s name we may hear called at the draft in the next few years is offensive tackle, Isaiah Wilson. He may only be a high school Junior, but Wilson already has a goal to make the NFL. “I want to be a first-round draft pick.” claims the 6’6”, 280lb Lineman. “I legit want to be known as that guy.”
For Wilson to take the next step in being drafted to the NFL, first, he must choose a college to attend which won’t be an easy decision since he has received offers from over 40 schools, including Michigan, Ohio State and Alabama. “I want to go to whichever school feels like home for me.” Wilson says.
Wilson, who is now ranked by ESPN as being a top-two prospect in the Class of 2017, could’ve never imagined how far football would take him when he first picked up the sport at the age of 10. He chose football looking to lose weight, but in a few short years, he fell in love with the game. Now, he is ready to take his game to new heights. “In my opinion, I ‘balled out’ this season,” Wilson said. “I think that I proved myself to my doubters and I think that I will continue to shatter the expectation that I hold for myself.”
Despite an incredible Junior season, Wilson still doesn’t receive quite the same attention as other top recruits, due to his position as an offensive lineman, as he says, “Linemen aren’t a major topic of discussion.” However, from a recruiting standpoint, it’s a “whole ‘nother story”. “I still receive plenty of attention in the recruiting world.”
As one of the most recruited football players in the 2017 Class, Wilson has had his fair share of ups and downs. “It’s been fun and stressful both. I’ve met some of my closest friends through the recruiting process,” He continued, “I've also met some of the greatest names in football and it’s been stressful to decide and make decisions on things.”
With over 40 offers, it’s understandable to have some schools stand out. After narrowing his list of schools to five in February, there is one school that looks to be the frontrunner for Wilson so far, saying, “Michigan has been a standout school, but as of now, I have no leader.”
Wilson plans on taking his time with the process. He says that he plans on committing sometime during this summer or maybe even in December. It is clear that Wilson wants to make an educated decision to where he commits, as he is taking the recruiting process very seriously: “I want to take as many visits as possible, so I can make the most informed decision. This decision is a life changing one.”
Being a top recruit definitely comes with intense scrutiny, but Wilson has taken all criticism with a grain of salt, stating, “I can only control how hard I work. I don’t really care what people are trying to say against me. All the compliments, I take in stride.”
Now, with his Senior season coming up and the recruiting process coming along, Isaiah Wilson is ready to cement his status as a top recruit and continue to “shatter expectations.”
